Chilling requirements of 'Riesling Itálico', 'Tannat' and 'Cabernet Franc' grapevines during the dormancy period

Abstract

The grapevine presents a dormancy period in autumn/winter, overcome by the accumulation of chilling hours (CH) ≤7.2ºC, generic temperature for temperate fruit trees. This work aimed to evaluate the chilling requirement to overcome dormancy in three grapevine cultivars. ‘Riesling Itálico’, ‘Tannat’ and ‘Cabernet Franc’ cuttings were collected in vineyards located in Veranópolis-RS, in April/2022, with zero hours of cold (CH≤7.2°C) in the field. The branches, processed into isolated-node cuttings, were placed in incubator chambers at temperature of 7.2°C for 13 exposure times (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 550 and 600 CH). At the end of each cold period, a portion of the cuttings was transferred to 25ºC for induction and evaluation of bud sprouting. The sprouting data were analyzed for the parameters of maximum sprouting, precocity and uniformity. The cultivars showed differences in the need for cold to overcome dormancy. ‘Riesling Iálico’, ‘Tannat’ and ‘Cabernet Franc’ presented a chill requirement of 150, 250 and 400 CH during dormancy period, respectively. The precocity and uniformity of bud sprouting of the buds was greater after the cold during dormancy was removed for each cultivar.
